Date: Wednesday, January 05, 2000. Subject: Lea County Query. Relative: DAUGHERTY, Albert. Family folklore has it that (great-) Uncle Albert was the Sheriff of Hobbs, NM. He was married but we don't know to who. We have a picture of him on his wedding day in 1917 pushing his new bride down the street in a wheelbarrow. The story goes that she was a vagrant⁄runaway he had arrested. There weren't facilities to hold her in jail so he took her to his house - where she stayed long enough to get people to talking. The ladies in town said it was shameful for an old man (he was 30-40, we think) to have a young girl living with him so he married her. To show the townsfolk he'd made her his bride he pushed her through town in the wheelbarrow. Can anyone give me any information on him, his wife or resources to find information concerning his law enforcement career in Hobbs? I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks, Rita Ellerd, phone (409) 299-1141, e-mail rellerd@hotmail.com

Subject: Lea Co. query. Date: Sunday, November 15, 1998. I would like to correspond with any descendants of William S. STAMPS, (b.1849 in MS), who married Mary "Mollie" HILL. In the 1900 census, they were living in Sherwood, Irion County, Texas with their daughters: Elma, Ada, Eunice, and Bernice. Also living with them was Nannie D. HILL (census lists her as "sister-in-law" to William) Around 1910's, they would move to Lea County, New Mexico, where Mary would die (though I haven't been able to locate death record⁄burial). Nannie D. HILL would marry her brother-in-law, William S. STAMPS and information on her tombstone suggests that she died in childbirth. The 1920 census shows William S. STAMPS as a widower living with his daughter, Eunice STAMPS-PRUIT in Lea County, New Mexico. Thank you, Alicia Brown. (xeno40@airmail.net)
